The skincare industry is embracing a glowing trend—literally. As red and blue light therapy devices flood both social media and store shelves, experts say the “light revolution” is more than hype—it’s science-backed skincare innovation.
While red light therapy has earned celebrity status for its anti-aging and skin-repairing benefits, blue light is quickly gaining traction, particularly among those fighting acne.
“Red light is definitely getting hyped right now, but blue light is also worth considering, especially if you’re dealing with acne,” says Brooke Jeffy, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Both red and blue lights use different wavelengths to deliver targeted skincare benefits:
- Red light penetrates deeper, stimulating collagen production, reducing inflammation, and improving skin texture.
- Blue light works on the skin’s surface, targeting acne-causing bacteria and helping reduce oil production, making it ideal for acne-prone skin.
“Red light can be great for reducing signs of aging and inflammation,” says Emily Wood, MD, a dermatologist with Westlake Dermatology in Texas. “But blue light has its own strengths, especially when it comes to keeping acne under control without irritating the skin.”
Even at-home devices are becoming more effective and accessible. “Technology has come a long way,” adds Ashish Bhatia, MD, a dermatologist in Illinois. “Patients can now benefit from real clinical-grade light therapy in the comfort of their homes—just make sure you’re using FDA-cleared products and following directions closely.”
As dermatologists continue to explore the full potential of light therapy, one thing is clear: skin care is having a bright moment, and it’s illuminating new ways to treat everything from wrinkles to breakouts.
