The Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has rolled out an anti-blindness initiative aimed at treating eye diseases across Sudan, benefiting approximately 12,000 individuals in the Gedaref, Khartoum, and Red Sea States.
The project, a collaborative effort with Al Basar International Foundation and the Sudanese Federal Ministry of Health (MOH), involves the deployment of three medical convoys. These convoys are providing essential eye care services including free medical examinations, medications, eyeglasses, and cataract surgeries.
To date, two convoys have successfully completed their missions in Gedaref and the Red Sea State. These operations have treated 8,338 patients and performed 776 cataract surgeries. The third medical convoy is currently being prepared for deployment in the Karari Locality of Khartoum, in coordination with local partners.
Qatar’s Ambassador to Sudan, Mohamed bin Ibrahim al-Sada, emphasized the importance of these medical convoys, noting that they play a crucial role in combating eye diseases amidst the ongoing challenges in Sudan. He also highlighted the opportunity these convoys present for medical and technical professionals to exchange expertise.
Dr. Esmat Mustafa, Senior Undersecretary of Sudan’s MOH, expressed appreciation for Qatar’s unwavering support to Sudan’s healthcare sector. He acknowledged the ongoing collaboration between the Qatari embassy and the Sudanese MOH, which ensures the continuous provision of vital medical assistance to meet the country’s health system needs.
This initiative was launched in celebration of Qatar National Day 2024, marking a significant milestone in the strengthening of bilateral health cooperation between Qatar and Sudan.
