Maharashtra’s Food and Civil Supplies Minister, Dhananjay Munde, was notably absent from the state cabinet meeting on Tuesday, attributing his absence to a recent eye surgery. The timing of Munde’s absence has stirred political speculation, as he is currently embroiled in multiple controversies.
Munde, who is also a senior leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), is facing scrutiny following the arrest of his close associate, Walmik Karad, in connection with an extortion case tied to the murder of Sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh in Beed district. Additionally, social activist Anjali Damania has accused Munde of corruption during his tenure as Agriculture Minister in the cabinet led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Damania has demanded that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis take immediate action and request Munde’s resignation during the cabinet meeting.
Speculation surrounding Munde’s absence further intensified after it was noted that he had skipped Chief Minister Fadnavis’s visit to Beed last week, leading to conjecture about the political pressures he may be facing. However, Munde clarified his absence through an official statement, asserting that the reason was purely medical. He explained that his doctors had advised him to refrain from exposure to sunlight and bright lights for ten days following the surgery.
Munde, who underwent the procedure under the care of senior ophthalmologist Dr. T. P. Lahane, had previously tweeted about the surgery, which took place six days ago. He emphasized that he is following his doctor’s advice during his recovery.
Officials have confirmed that both Chief Minister Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar were informed of Munde’s inability to attend the cabinet meeting. The statement stressed that there were no other reasons behind Munde’s absence.
