At the 2025 BW Healthcare Excellence Summit and Awards, Mahipal S. Sachdev, Chairman and Medical Director of Centre for Sight Eye Hospital, stressed the importance of doctors taking on leadership roles to improve healthcare systems. While acknowledging the critical role of medical expertise in patient care, he argued that leadership and strategic planning are equally vital for ensuring quality treatment and operational efficiency.
“Healthcare operates like a pyramid, with doctors bearing the burden of patient care, leaving little room for involvement in management or business development,” Sachdev remarked. He emphasized that the intense demands of the medical profession leave doctors with little time to engage in healthcare management. Long shifts and constant patient care pressures often push operational duties to non-medical professionals, which can sometimes undermine the efficiency and patient-centered approach needed in hospitals.
Sachdev, who has been instrumental in developing Centre for Sight, shared his own journey of balancing the demands of the medical field with entrepreneurial leadership. He recalled the overwhelming nature of his work early on but credited his success to perseverance and focus: “Hard work, dedication, and constant focus on my goal—redeploying everything I earned into Centre for Sight.”
The hospital leader also underscored the importance of securing early-stage investment, having raised his first round of private equity in 2010. Offering advice to young entrepreneurs, Sachdev urged them to stay committed to their passions, even in the face of setbacks. “When nothing works, hard work does. Stay focused and passionate. If you love what you do, commit to it fully—if not, walk away,” he said.
His remarks at the summit highlight the need for doctors to embrace leadership roles, not only for the advancement of healthcare but also to ensure that the systems supporting patient care run efficiently and effectively.
