Julia Zimmermann, PD, PhD, is redefining the future of skincare. As CEO of terraplasma and Managing Director of hyped about science, she has transformed her deep scientific expertise into real-world medical innovations. Trained as a physicist and biophysicist, Zimmermann began her research career at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics, where she studied cold atmospheric plasma. That same research now powers cutting-edge skin treatment devices.
Zimmermann helped develop cold plasma technology for use on human skin. Unlike the high-temperature plasma found in nature, this form of plasma is generated safely at room temperature using a method called surface micro-discharge (SMD). This technique partially ionizes the surrounding air without creating heat or requiring costly noble gases.
Through her companies—terraplasma, terraplasma medical, and the newer hyped about science—Zimmermann is focused on bringing plasma-based skincare treatments to consumers. Her latest product, PHLAS, is a compact, battery-powered device designed for at-home use. It treats acne-prone and blemished skin by reducing redness, inflammation, and pore size while improving skin texture. The device applies cold plasma to targeted areas of the face in just 30 seconds and will be available for purchase later this month.
In an interview with Dermatology Times, Zimmermann explained that cold plasma works by producing reactive oxygen and nitrogen species—the same molecules used by the body’s immune system to fight bacteria and inflammation. This makes the treatment both natural and effective.
PHLAS stands out from other plasma-based devices like plasma jets and dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs). Unlike those systems, SMD-based devices do not require direct electrical contact with the skin or costly gas inputs, making them safer and more affordable for everyday consumers.
Zimmermann co-developed the technology with her father, who has since retired. Reflecting on their collaboration, she shared, “I’m really sad about [his retirement] because it was so great working with him. But I just wanted to share this because it’s somehow also a personal journey and it was really great doing all this together with him.”
With her blend of scientific precision and entrepreneurial drive, Julia Zimmermann is paving the way for new treatments that bring advanced science directly into the hands of consumers.
