In today’s world, where pollution, stress, and unhealthy lifestyles are common, the body’s natural detox systems can struggle to keep up. Glutathione, a powerful antioxidant produced by the body, plays a key role in protecting cells, supporting liver function, and promoting youthful, healthy skin.
In a conversation with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Viral Desai – Board-Certified Cosmetic Plastic and Hair Transplant Surgeon, and Medical Director at DHI India – shared valuable insights on the benefits of glutathione therapy.
“Glutathione is a tripeptide made in the liver from three amino acids – cysteine, glutamine, and glycine,” Dr. Desai explained. “It helps neutralize harmful free radicals, detoxifies chemicals and pollutants, and supports the immune system. But factors like aging, poor diet, and chronic stress can lower glutathione levels, leading to dull skin, fatigue, and poor health.”
How Glutathione Therapy Works
Dr. Desai said glutathione therapy can be given in several ways – intravenous (IV) infusion, intramuscular injection, or oral supplements. IV therapy offers the best absorption by bypassing the digestive system.
Key functions of glutathione therapy include:
- Liver Detox: Glutathione binds to toxins, heavy metals, and pollutants, helping the body remove them through urine or bile.
- Skin Brightening: It reduces dark spots and evens out skin tone by slowing melanin production.
- Energy Support: Glutathione helps improve energy levels by protecting mitochondria – the powerhouses of cells.
- Immune Boost: It helps balance immune responses and supports T-cell function.
Clinical Benefits
- Brighter Skin: Glutathione’s skin-lightening effects are widely appreciated in aesthetic treatments.
- Liver Health: It supports the liver in processing alcohol, medications, and environmental toxins.
- More Energy: Patients often feel more alert, energetic, and less tired after treatment.
- Less Inflammation: It may help with chronic conditions like arthritis and metabolic disorders by calming inflammation.
Treatment Plan
“IV glutathione is usually given in doses of 600 to 1200 mg per session, lasting about 30 minutes,” said Dr. Desai. “For best results, 4 to 8 weekly sessions are recommended, followed by maintenance treatments.”
Side effects are rare, though mild redness or discomfort at the injection site may happen. Dr. Desai emphasized the importance of consulting a healthcare provider before starting treatment to rule out any allergies or health risks.
