From June 4 to June 10, over 200 patients in the Southern Red Sea Region underwent successful eye surgeries at Assab Hospital. The initiative was a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Health’s regional branch and Birhan Aini Hospital in Asmara.
Dr. Eyob Beyene, an eye surgery expert and the program’s coordinator, shared that this initiative was part of a broader effort, continuing surgeries that had previously been carried out in the Northern Red Sea Region. Notably, he highlighted that the surgeries performed on 10 children were particularly successful and unique.
Nurse Gebre Hailemicael, the head of eye treatment at Assab Hospital, explained that prior to the surgeries, a survey had been conducted across four sub-zones and 52 villages, reaching 3,000 citizens. The survey helped ensure the program’s success. In addition to surgeries, the beneficiaries also received medicines and eyeglasses.
Patients who benefited from the program expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the care they received.
