Jamie Lee Curtis has opened up about the painful reason she chose to get plastic surgery in her twenties. In a candid interview with 60 Minutes, which aired on May 11, the 66-year-old actress shared that harsh criticism from a cinematographer led her to undergo an eye lift at age 25.
While filming the 1985 movie Perfect with John Travolta, Curtis faced an unexpected and hurtful remark. “He was like, ‘Yeah, I’m not shooting her today. Her eyes are baggy,’” she recalled. “And I was 25, so for him to say that, it was very embarrassing.”
The comment deeply affected her, pushing her to have cosmetic surgery as soon as filming ended. However, Curtis admits she regretted the decision immediately. “That’s just not what you want to do when you’re 25 or 26. And I regretted it immediately and have kind of sort of regretted it since,” she said.
Beyond the physical results, the surgery had a more serious consequence—it led to a dependency on painkillers. Curtis explained, “I became very enamored with the warm bath of an opiate. You know, drank a little bit…never to excess, never any big public demonstrations. I was very quiet, very private about it, but it became a dependency for sure.”
Over the years, the Freaky Friday star has become a vocal advocate for body positivity and embracing natural beauty. In a 2021 interview with Fast Company, she expressed concern over society’s obsession with plastic surgery, fillers, and photo filters. “Once you mess with your face, you can’t get it back,” she warned.
During her 60 Minutes interview, Curtis reaffirmed her stance. “I’ve become a really public advocate to say to women you’re gorgeous and you’re perfect the way you are. So yeah, it was not a good thing for me to do,” she said.
Today, Jamie Lee Curtis continues to encourage women to accept their natural appearance and resist societal pressures to alter themselves.
