Suzy Adwoa Pinamang, a second-year student at Adventist Senior High School in Bantama, is set to undergo eye surgery in June following a tragic accident that left her with severe facial injuries.
Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, shared the update after visiting Suzy in London on Sunday, May 25, 2025. The minister was in the UK representing President John Mahama at the Oxford Africa Conference, and made time to check on the recovering student.
“I am glad our courageous Suzy is in high spirits and doing very well,” Ablakwa wrote in a Facebook post.
“Suzy’s doctors have conducted numerous tests following her gunshot injuries and have scheduled her surgery for next month.”
He also commended the staff of the Ghana High Commission in London for their outstanding support and extended his heartfelt gratitude to businessman Ibrahim Mahama, who generously offered to cover the full cost of Suzy’s medical treatment and travel expenses.
A Community United by Compassion
Suzy’s ordeal began on April 4, 2025, when she was accidentally shot in the eye by a classmate, prompting immediate medical attention. She was first treated at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi and later referred to the Agarwal Eye Hospital in Accra. Due to the complexity of her injuries, doctors recommended specialist surgery abroad.
After a heart-wrenching video plea by Suzy went viral, public support poured in. Mr. Ibrahim Mahama’s swift intervention ensured her travel and treatment expenses were fully covered, sparing her family any financial burden. Suzy arrived in the UK on May 10, 2025, and has since undergone extensive tests to prepare for her upcoming surgery.
The Minister’s visit follows the expedited visa process facilitated by UK High Commissioner Harriet Thompson, who worked closely with Ghanaian officials to ensure Suzy’s safe and timely relocation to London for urgent care.
Ablakwa encouraged Ghanaians to continue praying for Suzy’s successful surgery and recovery, describing her as “an incredible young woman with a resilient spirit.”
