Unilever has unveiled groundbreaking research that links the skin microbiome to psychological wellbeing, a discovery that could revolutionize the future of skincare and beauty innovation.
In partnership with the University of Liverpool’s Microbiome Innovation Centre and Brain & Behaviour Lab, Unilever scientists found that higher concentrations of beneficial skin bacteria, especially Cutibacterium, on areas like the face and underarms are associated with lower stress levels and better mood. This study, published in the British Journal of Dermatology, is the first to establish these specific microbiome-wellbeing connections on different parts of the body.
Unilever, which holds over 100 microbiome-related patents and has a database of more than 30,000 skin samples, is now incorporating these insights into its beauty and personal care products, including popular brands like Dove, Vaseline, Pond’s, and Dermalogica.
As consumers increasingly see beauty and wellbeing as interconnected, Unilever’s findings place the company at the forefront of the emerging “skin-brain axis” conversation. By advancing the science behind how skin bacteria influence mood and stress, Unilever aims to create holistic beauty products that enhance both physical appearance and mental wellness — responding to the rising demand for solutions that nourish both the body and the mind.
