A growing trend in Botox and fillers is gaining popularity for its ability to address both cosmetic concerns and medical conditions. Initially used for therapeutic purposes, Botox injections into the masseter muscles, located on the sides of the jaw, are now being recognized for their dual benefits.
Therapeutic Origins and Expanding Benefits
Nurse Practitioner Donna Abdelnour from the Advanced Cosmetic Surgery and Laser Center explained that Botox was originally used to treat temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. “Initially, it was used as a therapeutic treatment for TMJ,” Abdelnour said. However, the appeal of this treatment has since expanded.
Facial plastic surgeon Dr. Jon Mendelsohn, also at the center, noted, “As we age, we begin to lose volume and elasticity in our faces.” This natural aging process has been accelerated by weight loss medications like Ozempic, resulting in a condition commonly referred to as “Ozempic face,” where patients seek to restore lost volume and elasticity.
Quick and Effective Treatment
To address this, Botox is injected into the masseter muscles, helping to soften the jawline and restore some of the lost volume. “We inject a little bit in that muscle to soften it,” explained Abdelnour. While Botox results typically last between three to six months, fillers can provide longer-lasting effects.
“The treatment is quick and easy,” Abdelnour added. “Botox takes just minutes, and although fillers take a bit longer, the results are subtle but lasting.”
Medical and Cosmetic Advantages
In addition to enhancing appearance, Botox and fillers can help alleviate jaw pain and headaches. By relaxing the muscles involved in nighttime teeth grinding, the injections reduce the strain on the jaw.
Despite the multiple benefits, these treatments typically start at several hundred dollars and are not covered by insurance.
