Walter Reed National Military Medical Center’s Refractive Surgery Center is dedicated to improving the operational readiness of active-duty service members by offering advanced vision correction procedures.
The center is staffed by skilled physicians and technicians who utilize cutting-edge lasers to perform procedures such as LASIK (Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis) and PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy). These surgeries are designed to address common refractive vision problems like myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism.
The Warfighter Refractive Eye Surgery Program (WRESP)
Through the Warfighter Refractive Eye Surgery Program (WRESP), active-duty service members, as well as third-year or higher students at the U.S. Naval Academy, West Point, Coast Guard Academy, and physicians attending the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU), are offered the opportunity to undergo refractive eye surgery to enhance their military readiness.
In 2024, WRESP performed 1,800 refractive surgeries, with the majority of patients coming from the U.S. Naval Academy.
“I was able to pursue my dream of flying in the U.S. Navy thanks to refractive eye surgery,” said Robert Cunningham, a U.S. Naval Academy Midshipman. “Without this procedure, my poor vision would have ended that dream. I’m grateful to the Walter Reed team for the excellent care I received.”
Eligibility and Requirements
Dr. Shayesteh Izaddoost, an optometrist at the center, explained the eligibility requirements for service members seeking refractive surgery. “All patients need command authorization and an eye exam within 12 months of their pre-op appointment. For the Air Force and Army, patients must have at least six months remaining in service, while the Navy and Marines require 12 months,” Dr. Izaddoost stated. “Reservists on active duty status must also meet the six- or twelve-month requirement, depending on their branch of service.”
A Life-Changing Experience
Sharon Thomas, an optometry technician at the center, emphasized the profound impact of the procedure: “We specialize in a critical part of the body—eyes. The ability to offer our patients a life without glasses or contact lenses is truly life-changing. It opens up a new world for them.”
By providing these advanced vision correction services, Walter Reed’s Refractive Surgery Center enhances the operational performance and quality of life of service members, ensuring they are ready for their diverse and demanding roles in the military.
