The Ordinary, a skincare brand recognized for its innovative approach and affordable prices, is making waves once again with the release of its latest product: a growth factor face serum designed to combat multiple visible signs of aging. Known for transforming high-performance skincare ingredients into accessible options for all, The Ordinary’s new serum offers a compelling alternative to its expensive competitors. But does it live up to the hype? We had the chance to test it ahead of its official launch and share our thoughts.
Growth factors, which are proteins naturally found in skin cells, have rapidly gained attention in the skincare world. These proteins serve as messengers, triggering mechanisms within the skin to promote repair and rejuvenation. By stimulating skin cell turnover and boosting the production of collagen and elastin—two essential components for maintaining smooth, firm skin—growth factors help restore a youthful appearance.
As we age, our skin’s natural growth factors diminish, making it harder for the skin to recover from environmental stressors such as UV rays and pollution, which accelerate the aging process. By replenishing these factors, The Ordinary’s new serum helps to rejuvenate the skin, encouraging older cells to function as younger ones.
While growth factors have been part of skincare science for decades, having first been discovered in the 1950s (with a Nobel Prize awarded to the researchers), it wasn’t until the 1990s that luxury brands began incorporating them into their products. However, the game has now changed, with The Ordinary bringing this advanced science to the market for a fraction of the usual cost—just £13.50. Typically, growth factor-infused skincare is reserved for high-end brands with steep price tags, with one notable exception being The Inkey List. However, The Inkey List product is less concentrated, making it difficult to compare directly.
