TikTok is buzzing with a new beauty trend: “DIY Botox” using scar tape as wrinkle patches. Users claim that medical-grade tape can instantly smooth fine lines, offering a cheap and accessible alternative to Botox. But is it really effective? Not exactly, though scar tape can temporarily alter the appearance of your skin.
What Is Scar Tape?
Scar tape is typically made from medical-grade silicone. It’s flexible, non-irritating, and designed for prolonged use on sensitive skin. Originally, scar tape is intended to reduce the appearance of scars by helping to retain moisture in the skin.
“This can visibly plump the outermost layer and soften the appearance of fine, superficial wrinkles,” explained Shannon Humphrey, MD, FRCPC, a clinical assistant professor of dermatology at the University of British Columbia.
Can Scar Tape Really Work as Wrinkle Patches?
While scar tape can produce a temporary smoothing effect by restricting facial muscle movement, the effects are only short-term. Shoshana Marmon, MD, PhD, FAAD, an assistant professor of dermatology at New York Medical College, says the tape works by trapping moisture, which can help smooth the skin temporarily. However, once the moisture evaporates, the skin returns to its natural state.
“Scar tape doesn’t change the skin’s quality or target the underlying causes of wrinkles,” Marmon explained.
Can You Use Wrinkle Patches as ‘DIY Botox’?
In short, no. Despite being labeled as “DIY Botox” on TikTok, dermatologists point out that the comparison is misleading.
“Scar tape works superficially and doesn’t address the muscle activity that creates most expression lines,” said Marmon. “Botox, on the other hand, temporarily paralyzes facial muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles.”
Unlike scar tape, Botox provides long-lasting results, typically lasting three to four months, and can help slow the visible effects of aging when used consistently.
