A new skincare trend is rapidly gaining popularity in Kolkata’s upscale beauty and wellness clinics — Intravenous (IV) beauty drips. Originally used for medical emergencies and by elite athletes, these nutrient-packed drips are now being used for brighter skin, smoother texture, and improved energy and metabolism. But is this treatment safe? Experts weigh in on the growing trend.
What is IV Beauty Drip?
IV therapy, typically associated with hospitals, is now being used for skin health. This treatment delivers vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants directly into the bloodstream, which is said to enhance absorption and achieve quicker, more lasting results.
Aesthetic expert Nripendra Guha explains that IV therapy bypasses the digestive system, ensuring better absorption of essential nutrients. “IV drip therapy improves skin health by directly delivering nutrients like vitamins and antioxidants into the bloodstream. This guarantees maximum absorption,” he said. The therapy supports hydration, boosts collagen production, and helps reduce skin issues such as fine lines, dullness, and loss of elasticity.
There are various formulations for different needs. Some focus on anti-aging, others on improving skin tone or boosting collagen production. “The benefits are more pronounced when the nutrients reach the bloodstream directly, compared to oral intake,” Guha added.
Dr. Debasish Biswas, an aesthetic physician and founder of Radiantt Estheticis, noted that IV therapy is often combined with broader wellness goals. “It can improve mental well-being by addressing nutrient deficiencies and reducing inflammation, which affects mood, energy levels, and sleep quality,” he said.
Common nutrients used in IV therapy include vitamin B12, folate, magnesium, and glutathione.
Personal Success Stories
Some people in Kolkata have reported positive results from IV therapy. Ajanta Lahiri, a professor at Jadavpur University, underwent a six-week IV course to treat pigmentation issues. “My skin looked refreshed, and the pigmentation faded much faster than I expected,” she said.
Sayak Banerjee, a sales manager, also saw benefits from glutathione therapy. “My skin texture improved, my hair became stronger, and my sleep quality got better,” he shared.
However, experts warn that IV therapy should not be a standalone solution. Dr. Biswas emphasized, “It works best when combined with other treatments, like oral supplements or topical medications.”
A Growing Trend
Once a niche treatment, IV therapy is becoming more popular in urban centers. Guha mentioned that the Indian market for IV aesthetic treatments grew by 37% in 2025, with cities like Kolkata seeing increasing demand. “We are seeing clients from all walks of life — professionals, homemakers, and even students,” he said.
Dr. Biswas added that professional athletes and frequent travelers are also turning to IV therapy for recovery and energy restoration. This growing interest reflects a shift towards integrating health and beauty concerns rather than treating them separately.
Safety and Regulation
Despite its popularity, IV therapy does come with risks. Both Guha and Biswas emphasize the importance of medical screening before starting the treatment.
“We conduct liver function and other relevant tests to assess eligibility,” said Guha. He also ensures that only approved formulations are used in his clinic.
Possible side effects include bruising, discomfort at the injection site, or more serious reactions like allergic responses or vein inflammation. Biswas stressed that procedures should always be done in a clinical setting under professional supervision.
A New Skincare Frontier?
The rise of IV therapy in Kolkata marks a shift towards a more holistic approach to skincare, focusing not just on surface-level results but on internal wellness. For now, it remains an alternative therapy that blends dermatology and wellness, raising important questions about its efficacy, safety, and the evolving nature of skincare.
