As airport fashion continues to gain popularity, content creators are now embracing a new trend: in-flight skincare routines. While long-haul flights can be an exciting journey, they often come with the downside of dry and irritated skin, a common consequence of the low humidity and pressure in the cabin.
The dry air at high altitudes can wreak havoc on your complexion, leaving skin feeling dehydrated, dull, and irritated. However, skincare experts have shared simple yet effective solutions to help maintain hydration and radiance while flying, even at 30,000 feet.
Skin Care is Essential While Flying
Dr. Trupti D. Agarwal, a consultant dermatologist at Sir HN Reliance Hospital in Mumbai, emphasizes the importance of moisturizing during flights. “The low humidity and pressure in an aircraft can dehydrate the skin, causing dryness, irritation, and dullness. That’s why moisturizing is the most important step during air travel,” she explains.
Dr. Nirupama Parwanda, MD Dermatologist and founder of Zolie Skin Clinic in New Delhi, concurs and highlights the extreme dryness in the cabin air, which can drop to as low as 20% humidity. “Moreover, many airplane windows don’t fully protect against UV rays, making sunscreen use critical during the flight,” she adds.
Skincare Routine Before, During, and After Your Flight
Experts recommend following a simple skincare routine to keep your skin glowing and hydrated throughout your journey. Here’s how to protect your complexion before, during, and after your flight:
Before You Fly:
Start your flight with a lightweight skincare regimen that cleanses, hydrates, and shields your skin. Dr. Parwanda advises washing your face with a hydrating cleanser to remove impurities without stripping the skin of its natural moisture. Follow with a non-comedogenic moisturizer and a toner that contains hyaluronic acid. “Hyaluronic acid is a hydration powerhouse,” she says. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) and finish off with a nourishing lip balm to protect your lips from drying out. Dr. Parwanda also advises avoiding makeup, AHA, BHA, and retinoids before or during the flight.
In-Flight:
To maintain hydration during the flight, facial mists are an excellent option. Reapply your moisturizer and lip balm throughout the journey to prevent dryness. Remember that prolonged sitting and excessive salt intake can lead to water retention, which may cause puffiness in your face or swollen feet. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and avoid alcohol and caffeine, which can further contribute to dehydration.
After Your Flight:
Once you’ve landed, use a mild cleanser to wash your face and follow with a hydrating sheet mask to soothe and calm your skin. For deeper rehydration, apply a serum containing hyaluronic acid or a ceramide-based moisturizer to restore moisture and promote skin healing.
By following these expert-recommended skincare practices, you can keep your skin refreshed and hydrated, ensuring that you arrive at your destination looking and feeling your best.
