SpaMedica has launched a new relocatable ophthalmic diagnostic and treatment center in Hereford, England. The 3,200 square-foot unit will help local patients access high-quality eye care closer to home.
The new center offers diagnostic services, cataract surgery, YAG laser capsulotomy, and post-operative care. This is expected to reduce long wait times and remove travel barriers for around 21,000 patients in the area who suffer from common eye conditions.
“Advancing eye care and making treatments available in a timely and convenient way is the heart of this investment,” said Richard Woodward, CEO of SpaMedica. “We believe patients should receive care within 30 minutes of where they live. This new center brings diagnostics and surgery under one roof, creating a scalable and effective solution.”
The facility’s relocatable design allows it to be quickly deployed to different areas as needed. This flexible model helps SpaMedica lower costs and expand services to more communities compared to building permanent hospitals.
To support patients further, SpaMedica also provides a free door-to-door transport service for those needing special assistance.
Patients referred by their optometrist or general practitioner are expected to receive treatment within four weeks. This is much faster than the current NHS target of 18 weeks in England.
“With over 25% of Herefordshire residents aged over 65, accessible eye care is vital,” said Jonathan Barnes, integration operations manager at Hereford. “This mobile center removes barriers by bringing essential services into the community. Our goal is to minimize disruption and maximize convenience for patients.”
The center has been strategically placed beside the ASDA superstore in Hereford. “It’s a well-known location, making it easier for patients to find. Plus, relatives who accompany patients can use the time to shop while waiting,” Barnes explained. “We’re excited to welcome our first patients and show Hereford the high-quality NHS care SpaMedica provides.”
This launch follows the recent opening of a new SpaMedica eye hospital in Wembley in April 2025. The Wembley facility expanded NHS cataract surgery availability across London and surrounding areas.
“At SpaMedica, we understand how life-changing cataract surgery can be,” said Zafar Khwaja, Hospital Manager. “We’re proud to partner with the NHS to reduce waiting times and deliver excellent care to more patients.”
