Shankar Subramonian, renowned tech entrepreneur and founder of American Megatrends (AMI), has donated $350,000 to establish a Mobile Eye Surgical Unit (MESU) in his hometown of Ettayapuram, Tamil Nadu. The contribution, made through Sankara Nethralaya (SN), will provide free cataract surgeries and vision care to underserved communities in South India by August 2025.
To celebrate his generosity, Sankara Nethralaya USA (SNUSA) – Atlanta Chapter hosted a Meet ‘n Greet event on April 26 at the Johns Creek Event Center, attended by community leaders, SNUSA volunteers, and supporters.
A Legacy of Innovation and Giving
Subramonian, an IIT Madras alumnus and CEO of AmZetta Technologies, is a pioneer in computing, holding 500+ U.S. patents—including the AMI BIOS found in most computers worldwide. Beyond tech, he has championed global health initiatives, including:
-
Founding the Shankar Center for Diabetic Research at IIT Madras (2024)
-
Supporting Emory University’s Global Diabetes Research Center
-
Annual contributions to the Atlanta Food Bank and Hindu Temple of Atlanta
“Service is the rent we pay for living,” Subramonian remarked. “This MESU will restore sight to those who’ve never had access to care.”
Transforming Eye Care in Rural India
The fifth MESU funded by Subramonian will conduct 80+ eye camps annually, offering:
- Free cataract surgeries in remote villages
- On-site procedures (unlike competitors requiring hospital visits)
- Follow-up care through Sankara Nethralaya’s network
“Shankar’s gift reaffirms our mission to eliminate preventable blindness,” said Bala Indurti, SNUSA President, announcing Subramonian as a Brand Ambassador.
A Night of Culture and Community
The event featured:
- Bharatanatyam/Kuchipudi performances by local artists
- Live music by vocalists Madhavi Uppuluri and Usha Mocherla
- Violin recitals by students of Jassotha Balasubramanyam
- Traditional prayers by Hindu Temple of Atlanta priests
Attendees included SNUSA trustees, medical professionals, and prominent donors like Dr. BK Mohan and Dr. Sujatha Reddy.
Looking Ahead
Under Bala Indurti’s leadership, SNUSA has expanded its U.S. outreach, raising critical funds for India’s underserved. With Subramonian’s latest contribution, thousands will gain the gift of sight—proving innovation and compassion can change lives.
