UK retailer Boots has introduced a new dermatology training programme for its pharmacists across the country. The goal is to better support customers dealing with common skin conditions.
Developed in partnership with the British Association of Dermatologists, L’Oréal Groupe, and dermatologist Dr Justine Hextall, the training equips Boots pharmacists with the knowledge to offer advice on a range of skin concerns.
According to Boots, the programme responds to growing demand for skin care support and aims to ease the burden on GP surgeries. Pharmacists will now be better prepared to assist with conditions such as acne, eczema (atopic dermatitis), psoriasis, keratosis pilaris, and hyperpigmentation.
The training also includes education on melanoma, the skin’s structure, the skin microbiome, and scalp health. Boots highlighted the importance of using L’Oréal Groupe’s scientific research to strengthen its pharmacists’ understanding of these issues.
Alongside the training initiative, Boots has also launched a new digital tool — the SmartSkin Checker — through its Boots Online Doctor service. This free tool uses artificial intelligence to analyze photos of skin concerns and suggest up to five possible conditions.
While the tool does not provide a diagnosis or replace professional medical advice, it can help users understand what they might be experiencing and guide them on the next steps.
Skin problems are among the top reasons people visit their GPs, accounting for one in four new consultations in England and Wales.
Jamie Kerruish, Healthcare Director at Boots, said:
“There is a clear need for accessible support for skin concerns and conditions, which is why we are so proud to be launching new technology and upskilling our pharmacy team members in stores. Combined with our huge skincare product range and beauty expertise, we can be the first port of call for all those with a skin concern, making it really easy for people to get quick advice and helping to relieve pressures on GP surgeries across the country.”
Dr Justine Hextall added:
“The training I developed for Boots with L’Oréal Dermatological Beauty helps pharmacists advise on and treat common skin conditions. Skin issues are increasing and can significantly affect people’s well-being — from discomfort to low confidence. This training gives pharmacists a deeper understanding of how to help.”
