An electrical issue has been confirmed as the cause of a fire that broke out at the Harman Eye Surgery Center on Saturday, according to the Forest Volunteer Fire Department.
Fire crews responded around 1 p.m. to a fire alarm at the center, located at 1835 Graves Mill Road. Forest Fire Chief Coleman said the building could have been completely destroyed if crews had arrived just a few minutes later.
“When they got there and saw smoke coming out, they forced entry and quickly knocked down the fire,” Coleman said. “This quick action was possible because of their extensive training.”
The fire began in a power strip, according to investigators. Firefighters faced zero visibility and intense heat upon entering the reception area, where most of the fire was located. The flames extended down the hallway, Coleman added.
The damage is estimated to cost around $500,000, mainly due to the sensitive medical equipment involved. The loss could have been worse if not for the timely response.
Harman Eye Center has not responded to interview requests. However, in a Facebook post, the center said they are rescheduling appointments and surgeries while preparing to rebuild.
Chief Coleman stressed the importance of working fire alarms. “This is a perfect example of why functional alarms are critical,” he said. He also praised the fire crews for their fast and professional response.
Departments assisting in the response included the Forest Fire Department, Boonsboro Volunteer Fire & Rescue, Bedford Fire Department, and Lynchburg Fire Department.
