Laser eye surgery (LES) is becoming an increasingly popular part of pre-wedding makeovers, according to new national research.
The study, conducted by Optical Express, revealed that more than a quarter (27%) of UK adults would consider laser eye surgery before their wedding day. The trend is particularly strong among younger generations, with 42% of Gen Z respondents showing interest in the procedure.
The main reasons for this rise in popularity include a desire to avoid wearing glasses or contact lenses on the big day, with 25% of respondents citing this as their motivation. Meanwhile, 24% of those surveyed said they wanted improved vision quality to fully experience their wedding day with clarity.
The survey also found that half of the UK population (50%) would prefer not to wear glasses in their wedding photos, highlighting the importance of looking their best. With 83% of respondents emphasizing the significance of appearance on their wedding day, it’s no surprise that laser eye surgery is becoming a go-to solution for clear vision and a glasses-free walk down the aisle.
Dr. Stephen Hannan, Clinical Services Director at Optical Express, explained: “It’s not surprising that more brides and grooms are considering laser eye surgery, especially within the younger generation. Weddings are among the most photographed events in a person’s life, so it makes sense people want to look and feel their best.”
Despite the growing popularity of laser eye surgery, Dr. Hannan noted that some people remain unsure about the procedure. He reassured, “Laser eye surgery is one of the safest procedures available. The risks of a sight-threatening infection are ten times more common in contact lens users who wear them for extended periods compared to those undergoing modern LASIK surgery. Many of our patients say they wish they had opted for the procedure sooner.”
Optical Express also emphasized that they provide thorough consultations to ensure the safety and suitability of all candidates. “Over 90% of patients are suitable for the procedure,” Dr. Hannan added.
Laser eye surgery remains the most popular elective surgery in the UK, with Optical Express experiencing a significant rise in bookings in the past year.
