On Thursday morning, 150 students at Benjamin Franklin Elementary received free eye exams and glasses thanks to a partnership between 100 Black Men of America Inc. and the VSP Eyes of Hope Mobile Clinic.
The initiative aims to remove barriers to eye care and ensure children have the vision support they need for learning success. According to VSP, regular eye exams are crucial for students, as up to 80% of classroom learning is visual.
“These mobile units break down barriers related to income, access, and location,” said Dr. Jarrett Johnson of VSP. “We serve communities affected by natural disasters and health care deserts—places where people often lack access to basic vision care.”
The mobile clinic provides comprehensive eye exams and prescription glasses on-site, making it easier for underserved communities to receive essential care. Thursday’s visit is part of a broader effort to promote health equity and academic readiness through improved vision.
