Vision loss can dramatically impact a person’s quality of life, affecting everything from employment to daily responsibilities. For many in Oklahoma, regaining clear vision is becoming a reality thanks to Dr. Steven Sarkisian, founder and CEO of Oklahoma Eye Surgeons.
Dr. Sarkisian specializes in premium cataract and glaucoma surgeries and has been a trailblazer in the field. He was the first in Oklahoma to implant the PanOptix trifocal lens and perform several advanced procedures, including the iStent, iStent Inject, Xen Gel Stent, and canaloplasty. Notably, he was the first in the U.S. to use the OMNI surgical system and the first worldwide to use the TRAB360 and VISCO360 devices—precursors to OMNI.
His interest in ophthalmology began during a medical school rotation. “I witnessed firsthand the profound impact that helping restore vision can have on a person’s quality of life,” he recalled. “That experience solidified my decision to specialize in ophthalmology.”
After serving on the faculty of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and later at the Dean McGee Eye Institute, Dr. Sarkisian founded Oklahoma Eye Surgeons in 2018. He envisioned a patient-centered clinic focused not just on treatment but also on compassion and innovation.
“Oklahoma Eye Surgeons was born from a desire to curate a truly exceptional, cutting-edge, and personalized experience,” he said.
At the forefront of the evolving field of glaucoma care, Dr. Sarkisian and his team are embracing minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), sustained-release drug delivery systems, and genetic testing to assess a patient’s risk of glaucoma—often before symptoms begin. As a principal investigator in the iDOSE TR trials, he is hopeful that daily prescription drops may eventually be replaced by longer-lasting solutions.
In cataract care, he champions robotic laser-assisted surgery and was an early adopter of ‘low-flow’ phacoemulsification, a technique that enhances patient safety and recovery.
Oklahoma Eye Surgeons also diagnoses and treats anterior segment conditions, including dry eye, corneal disease, and refractive errors. The clinic has made it a priority to expand access to care in rural areas and actively promotes education and prevention.
“Regular eye exams are essential—even in the absence of symptoms,” Dr. Sarkisian emphasized. “Early detection can prevent major vision loss.”
Looking ahead, Dr. Sarkisian remains dedicated to advancing ophthalmology and improving outcomes for his patients.
“The ability to preserve or restore sight profoundly impacts quality of life,” he said. “It’s an honor to serve the Oklahoma City community and help patients maintain their independence and confidence.”
