A Cork entrepreneur has expressed her surprise at being named one of three finalists for a distinguished sustainability award at one of Ireland’s largest international trade shows. Claire O’Sullivan, founder of Bantry-based WASI (Wild Atlantic Seaweed Ireland) Seaweed Skincare, has been shortlisted for the Sustainability Champion category of the Business of Craft Awards. The awards are part of the upcoming international showcase dedicated to Irish craft and design businesses.
WASI is one of 14 Cork businesses being supported by the Local Enterprise Offices (LEOs) of Cork County and Cork City at the event, which took place at the RDS Dublin from January 19 to 21. The winners was announced on January 20.
The Cork LEOs provide essential mentoring and a range of support services to both emerging and established businesses throughout the year. O’Sullivan has credited the LEOs for playing a pivotal role in the growth of her business.
“Without the LEOs, my business wouldn’t be where it is today,” she said. “Their mentoring has meant the world to me. Going to the showcase was a turning point, and those opportunities helped propel my business forward.”
O’Sullivan, whose products are sold across Ireland and internationally, emphasized that her global reach would not have been possible without the assistance of the Local Enterprise Offices.
The showcase, which marks its 50th anniversary this year, is one of the largest international trade shows in the country. It offers manufacturers, designers, and craft makers the opportunity to display their collections to more than 3,500 buyers from both Ireland and abroad. The event is presented on behalf of the Design and Crafts Council Ireland, with support from Local Enterprise Offices and Enterprise Ireland, which help promote the trade show internationally through their global network.
