Rayner, the only UK manufacturer of cataract lenses, has been honoured with the prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise 2025 for its innovative RayOne EMV intraocular lens (IOL).
IOLs are small acrylic lenses used to restore vision in patients suffering from cataracts, a condition where the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy. Over 30 million IOLs are implanted globally each year, and Rayner has long been a leader in cataract surgery solutions.
Founded in Worthing, Rayner has a rich history of innovation, dating back more than 75 years when it developed the world’s first IOL in collaboration with British ophthalmic surgeon Sir Harold Ridley.
The company’s commitment to improving patient outcomes continues with the RayOne EMV IOL, launched in 2020. Developed with renowned ophthalmic surgeon Professor Graham Barrett, the RayOne EMV offers an extended range of vision for patients thanks to its advanced patented optic design. To date, more than 400,000 RayOne EMV IOLs have been shipped from the UK to over 65 countries worldwide.
Rayner received the King’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category for the lens, recognising its significant impact on improving the quality of life for cataract patients.
Tim Clover, CEO of Rayner, expressed his pride in the achievement: “Surgeons and patients place immense trust in us to deliver life-enhancing visual outcomes – and this award is a powerful recognition of that. It reflects the real-world impact of our technology and the dedication of our teams.”
Rayner had previously won the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2020. Clover added, “I am immensely proud to see Rayner once again acknowledged as a leader in cataract innovation.”
The King’s Awards for Enterprise, renamed in 2023 to honour King Charles III, continue the legacy of Queen Elizabeth II by recognising outstanding UK businesses. Celebrating its 59th year, the King’s Award is the highest business accolade in the country.
