Snap Inc. has revealed its upcoming lightweight augmented reality (AR) glasses, designed to act as wearable computers with see-through lenses. Unveiled at the Augmented World Expo 2025, the new device, known as Specs, is scheduled for release in 2026. The glasses will be powered by the upcoming Snap OS update, offering a variety of cutting-edge features.
The Specs
The Specs glasses will allow users to translate 2D information into 3D floating objects right before their eyes. This will be made possible through the integration of advanced language models like OpenAI and Gemini. Additionally, the glasses will feature real-time transcription for up to 40 languages, including the ability to accurately interpret non-native accents. For developers, Specs will also provide the ability to create and manipulate 3D objects while wearing the glasses and remotely manage multiple pairs.
Augmented Reading Lenses: A Collaboration with Singapore’s National Library Board
In a separate but related announcement, Snap Inc. introduced a new feature for its AR glasses: the Augmented Reading Lenses. Developed in collaboration with the National Library Board of Singapore and LePub Singapore, these lenses enhance the reading experience by converting printed text into engaging visuals and soundscapes. Using real-time Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and generative AI, the device scans the text as the user reads and activates relevant images and audio.
How It Works
As users read a book, the AR glasses recognize the printed text and trigger corresponding visuals and sounds. For example, if the text describes a door opening or an environmental sound, the glasses will play the appropriate audio through the built-in stereo speakers. The visuals then appear in the user’s field of vision, synced with the text, making the reading experience more immersive.
The Collaboration
This innovative feature is part of a broader initiative to encourage more people to engage with books using technology. The National Library Board of Singapore aims to use AR to create a more interactive and compelling reading experience, hoping to inspire more people to read. The project is a joint effort with LeGarage, the innovation branch of LePub Singapore, to develop both the experience and the campaign for the Augmented Reading Lenses.
Beta-testing of these Snap AR glasses and lenses will begin in Singapore in late 2025, with plans for a full public release to follow based on feedback from users.
