A three-day eye surgery camp began on May 29 at the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Poangsha. The camp is organized by Eleutheros Christian Society (ECS) in partnership with Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), the state Department of Social Welfare, Mercy Eye Centre Dimapur, and the Department of Health and Family Welfare. The camp will continue until May 31.
On the first day, around 70 to 80 patients attended the camp. Many of them came from across the Indo-Myanmar border to receive treatment.
The camp was officially launched by MLA and Social Welfare Advisor Wangpang Konyak. In his speech, he emphasized that the goal of such efforts is to improve the lives of the people. He said one department alone cannot meet all welfare needs and encouraged collaboration between civil society organizations and government agencies.
MLA Konyak also stressed the importance of updating Aadhar details for Anganwadi beneficiaries to ensure accurate records. This, he said, would help in providing the right support to people at the village level. He pointed out that some pensioners receive multiple pensions due to poor record-keeping and urged officials and the public to help identify such cases.
Leena, the Country Project Coordinator for MSF India, spoke about the need for fair and equal healthcare for everyone, regardless of their background. She highlighted the urgent need to improve healthcare in remote areas and called for more patient-focused care. She encouraged local leaders to make better use of the PHC, especially for maternal and child health services. She also thanked the community and ECS for their support and looked forward to continued cooperation.
Dr. Chingkup from Mercy Eye Centre said that charity work in remote areas often takes at least two months. He praised the camp as a successful example of people with a shared vision working together.
The main goal of the camp is to bring specialized medical care to people in hard-to-reach areas. The focus is especially on maternal and child healthcare, with added attention to nutrition.
