The See Life Better Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded by Dr. Michael Mann, is dedicated to helping people regain their sight, especially those who cannot afford vision care. Whether through international medical missions or surgeries at Mann Eye Institute clinics in Texas, the foundation’s mission is simple: everyone deserves the right to see clearly, regardless of their financial situation.
This past weekend, the foundation hosted its first-ever fundraiser, Saddle Up for Sight, at the Armadillo Palace in Houston. The event featured live music by local favorite The Guzzlers, dancing, and laughter, creating a fun and memorable evening. Thanks to generous support from the community—including silent auction bids, donations, and ticket sales—the foundation raised over $20,000 to support sight-restoring care.
Dr. Michael Mann, founder of the Mann Eye Institute, launched the See Life Better Foundation after more than 40 years in ophthalmology. Since starting his practice in 1977, Dr. Mann has grown the institute from one location to 16 across Houston and Austin. Over his career, he has performed more than 40,000 LASIK procedures and 50,000 cataract surgeries.
The foundation was created in response to a growing problem: many hardworking Americans struggle to afford critical eye care, even with insurance. The See Life Better Foundation helps bridge that financial gap by offering support to those who need help accessing vision services.
So far in 2024, the foundation has provided about $8,000 in assistance to help 10 patients receive the care they needed. Applicants go through a detailed review process, which includes an evaluation of both medical and financial need, to ensure support reaches those who need it most.
In addition to helping people in Texas, the foundation also funds international mission trips, bringing eye care to underserved communities in developing countries. Dr. Mann has long partnered with Benevolent Mission International, offering cataract surgeries and eye exams to those who otherwise would go without care.
Each mission trip costs the foundation around $900 in technical support, which allows more patients to receive exams and surgeries. These trips do more than restore sight—they give people the chance to regain independence and hope.
The success of Saddle Up for Sight marks a strong start for the foundation’s fundraising efforts. Inspired by Dr. Mann’s lifelong commitment to service, the foundation continues his legacy of giving back. Dr. Mann has also been active in organizations like the Rotary Club of Humble, Barbara Bush Literacy Foundation, and Prevent Blindness Texas, all of which reflect his dedication to community health and well-being.
